LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Juniors
Lauren Romines and
Kendra Whittley both fired 1-under-par 71s to lead the Midwestern State Mustangs in the second round of the NCAA Division II Super Regional 4 Golf Championship at the Wigwam Resort.
The Mustangs remained sixth as a team after tallying a 300 in the second round for a two round total of 606. MSU's 300 was the third lowest round of the day.
MSU is 16 strokes behind leader Tarleton State 590, but only eight behind second place Cal-State Monterrey at 598 and seven off the third place tie between Central Oklahoma and Grand Canyon at 599. St. Edward's is fifth at 601.
"We've put ourselves in a position to possibly advance," said MSU Coach
Jeff Ray. "We need that one great round and get four quality scores. Tuesday should be fun."
The top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams advance to the NCAA finals at the Division II Spring Championships Festival May 16-19 at the Persimmon Ridge Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
Romines is tied for 12th individually at 5-over-149, while Whittley is tied for 14th at 6-over-150.
Romines, who had a 78 on Sunday, jumped out early with birdies on the second and seventh holes and made the turn at 2-under-par. She bogeyed 13 and 14 to go even before bouncing back with a bird on 15 for her career-best of 71.
Whittley bounced back from a non-team score counting 79 on Sunday with a round on Monday that featured a two birdies and a bogey for her 71.
"Kendra and Lauren had great rounds," said MSU Coach
Jeff Ray. "They were both great in all areas, even with the course playing a little tougher than yesterday."
Junior
Lindsay Burkhart posted a 6-over 78 for the round for a 36-hole total of 156.
The day was a disappointment for junior
Taylor Klutts and freshman
Brenna Moore.
Klutts, who entered the day tied for fifth after an even-par 72 on Sunday, struggled from the start to post a 9-over 81 and not figure in the team score. She slipped to a tie for 23rd entering the final round at 153.
Moore also had problems and posted double bogeys on two of the four par 3s and a bogey on another on the way to an 8-over 80 and a 36-hole total of 158.
Central Oklahoma's Taylor Neidy fired a 4-under 68 on Monday and is in the lead at 4-under 140 individually, three strokes ahead of CSU-Monterey Bay's Courtney Soeukland at 1-under 143. Three others are tied for third at even-par 144.
The final round is Tuesday at Wigwam Resort's par 72, 6191 yard Heritage Course.
