Smith's eventful day leads Mustangs in opening round at NCAA II Super Regionals

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Midwestern State junior Sam Smith fired a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Mustangs in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Super Regional at the Jefferson City Country Club.

The Mustangs posted a 302 as a team to sit tied for 12th among the 20 teams after the first round.

Central Missouri leads the field at 2-under 286, with Northern Kentucky six back at 292 in second.  Bellarmine (Ky.) Grand Valley State (Mich.) and Indianapolis (Ind.) are tied for third at 296.

Smith is tied for 12th after his eventful opening round 73.  The Archer City junior recorded five birdies and six bogeys on the day.

Smith was 1-under at the turn with a pair of birds and a bogey on the front nine, but the back side was an adventure.  He bogeyed 10, but birdied 11 and 13 to go to 2-under.

He dropped another shot at 14, got it back with a birdie at 15, but came home with three bogeys to end the round at 73.

Sophomore Jeremy LeGuen carded a 3-over 75 for MSU to tie for 28th as he chalked up a pair of birdies with five bogeys over the par 72, 7112 yard JCCC Course.

The final three holes cost all the Mustangs, as every MSU player recorded at least one bogey on the way in.

Senior Trevor Arianna and junior Raine Copeland each posted 5-over 77 on Monday.

Freshman Derek Oland struggled in his first NCAA tournament round without recording a birdie, while chalking up four bogeys and a double bogey on his way to a 6-over 78.

The Mustangs face second round action on Tuesday at JCCC.  The tournament concludes on Wednesday with the top five teams and two individuals not part of those squads advancing to the finals at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky., May 15-18, part of the Division II Spring Championships Festival.
