WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State coach Jeff Trimble announced the signing of 10 prep standouts to National Letters of Intent Tuesday to complete the Mustangs’ 2012 signing class.
“I’m excited about this class,” Trimble said. “They are all smart soccer players with a good mixture of size and speed. We have players who can make an impact as a freshman. They are very hard working and make up a very good soccer playing class.”
The group is blessed with a bevy of midfield talent and a pair of dynamic forwards with many showing the savvy to contribute in multiple positions.
Leading the charge in the midfield is Stevie Harris, who tallied a prolific 80 goals and 68 assists during a solid four-year prep career at Denton Ryan High School. The 5-4 midfielder was a three-time District 11-4A MVP earning TASCO all-state accolades after scoring 28 goals and 34 assists while leading the Raiders to a state semifinal showing in 2011.
“Stevie is good with the ball at her feet,” Trimble said.”She is a very skilled dribbler and is a very aggressive soccer player.”
Mansfield Summit High’s Ashley Cottrell also gained TASCO all-state and all-region honors after helping the Jaguars to an 18-3 mark and a Class 4A Region I quarterfinal appearance this spring. She was named District 16-4A Midfielder of the Year as a junior and senior.
“Ashley has great size and is good with the ball at her feet,” Trimble said. “She is a great passer and makes good decisions.”
Alexandra Copp of Frisco Centennial High School earned first-team All-District 18-4A honors as a senior in 2012 while helping CHS to postseason appearances as a junior and senior.
“Alexandra has a solid skill set and is good on the ball,” Trimble said. “She does well getting up and down on the wing and we really like her size.”
Mansfield Legacy High’s Alex Edwards led the Broncos in goals and assists as a senior in 2012 earning first-team All-District 5-5A honors while earning the league’s Utility Player of the Year honors.
“Alex is a very good soccer player with the ball at her feet,” Trimble said. “She has a good shot, passes well and has a really good shot. She has the ability to play multiple positions and is very composed on the ball.”
Morgan Hannon of Midland High School claimed District 3-5A Offensive MVP honors after leading the Bulldogs to a 25-10 mark, a district championship and to the Region I-5A quarterfinals this season. She also claimed all-league accolades as a sophomore and junior.
“Morgan is very good in the air and is a very aggressive soccer player,” Trimble said.
Jennifer Justice is a 2012 graduate of Burleson High School who competed solely at the club level for coach Tarik Guendouzi’s Fort Worth Football Club side in the Lake Highlands Classic League’s first division.
“Jennifer controls the ball and passes it very well and is strong on the ball,” Trimble said.
Allen High’s Teri Todd competed as a midfielder and defender for the Eagles while serving as a captain during her freshman and senior campaigns.
“Teri makes very good decisions with the ball and is a smart soccer player,” Trimble said.
Kaily Whitsel of Keller Central High School served as a varsity captain this spring and has played on numerous high level club squads.
“Kaily has the ability to play multiple positions,” Trimble said. “She has great speed and never stops moving.”
The class also includes a pair of extremely capable strikers in Amarillo High’s Kaila Maxey and Kinsli Pounds of Mansfield Legacy High School.
Maxey played a key role in helping the AHS Sandies to Region I-4A quarterfinal showings in 2009, 2010 and 2011 before advancing to the Area round this spring. She is a three-time all-district honoree.
“Kaila has a good shot with speed,” Trimble said. “She makes good decisions in the offensive third of the field.”
Pounds earned first-team All-District 5-5A mention following each of her junior and senior seasons after garnering second-team acclaim as a sophomore in 2010. Her play played a key role in helping Legacy High to state playoff appearances in each of the last three campaigns.
Midwestern State returns 15 letter winners and seven starters off of last season’s Lone Star Conference championship squad. The Mustangs have advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason in each of the last two seasons.
Midwestern faces Fort Lewis (Colo.) in its 2012 season opener on Aug. 31 at the MSU Soccer Field.
