Mack named to LSC Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Team

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State's Cara Mack garnered Lone Star Conference Track & Field All-Academic honors Wednesday when the league announced its annual awards.

The sophomore from Llano carries a sterling 4.00 grade-point average as mathematics major. She earned Division II All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association in 2010 and was a member of the 2010-11 LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Mack returned to competition this spring running clocking season bests of 20:10.35 in the 5,000-meter run, 5:06.35 in the 1,500-meter run and 2:35.37 in the 800-meter dash after helping the Mustangs to a conference title and an NCAA Division II championship appearance as a freshman in 2010.

Angelo State graduate student Cathryn Rittenberry earned Academic Athlete of the Year honors for the second consecutive year to head the 11-member squad. She boasts provisional marks in the 100-meter hurdles and heptathlon this spring.

Other honorees include West Texas A&M's Katie Jones and Tara Tarrant, Angelo State's Emeline Crutcher, Kelsey Coffman and Summer Sutherland, Incarnate Word's Shaneve Swift and Stephanie Glatt, Tarleton State's Kyndal Trnka and Texas A&M-Kingsville's Samantha Alvarez.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade-point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Athlete of the Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players with the league's sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.
