GRANBURY, Texas – With a pair of players tied for second individually, the Midwestern State Mustangs sit in third as a team just two strokes out of the lead at Tarleton State's Doc Housewright Invitational at the Harbor Lakes Golf Club.
 
The Mustangs posted a 298 as a team after the first round, to stand just behind leader St. Edward's at 296 and host Tarleton State at 297 in the 14-team tournament.
 
Midwestern got strong play from juniors Kendra Whittley and Lauren Romines.  Both fired a 1-over-par 73 on the par 72, 5,810 yard Harbor Lakes course to sit in an eight-way tie for second, two strokes behind Tarleton's Sharon Lau who posted a 1-under-71.

The 73 is a new collegiate low for Romines.
 
"Kendra and Lauren were super today," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray.  "Lauren played her best round of competitive golf since she's been here."
 
"We played well from tee to green and placed the ball well, but didn't have one of our best putting rounds."

The Mustangs have two more tied for 17th with freshman Brenna Moore and junior Lindsay Burkhart carding a 4-over 76.  Taylor Klutts provided the fifth score with an 80.
 
Brittney Smith posted an 84 in the first round playing as an individual.
 
"We had a great ball striking day," said Ray.  "We made few mental mistakes and it paid off.  This is a great golf course and you have to play smart."
 
The final round of the tournament is Tuesday starting at 8:30 a.m.
