Montalvo improves provisional time at Sun Angel Classic to highlight busy MSU track weekend

RESULTS: North Texas Invitational
RESULTS: 33rd Sun Angel Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Midwestern State senior Brissia Montalvo continued her national meet qualification quest Saturday night here in the 33rd Sun Angel Classic.

The senior from El Paso upped her provisional and PR to 10:55.33 showing in her third 3,000-meter steeplechase event in the last three weeks.

"It's been a very tough stretch for her," MSU coach Koby Styles said. "But with some of the times put up over the last week, she really needed to improve the provisional time. As good as her run was tonight, it could have been better. She stumbled in the first and last water jumps."

The time is the seventh best in NCAA Division II this season as three runners have now met the automatic qualification time to the NCAA II Championship meet set for May 24-26 at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colo.

The four to gain auto qualifying status include Adams State's Alicia Nelson (10:14.66), Alaska-Anchorage's Susan Tanui (10:15.47) and Hallidie Wilt (10:31.30) and Cal State-Stanislaus' Courtney Anderson (10:32.83).

Sophomore Ashley Flores was the only other MSU runner to compete in the Sun Angel Classic posting a season-best time of 18:02.25 in the 5,000-meter run which is the third best time for a Lone Star Conference runner this spring.

"Ashley came out strong, but just couldn't get her legs under her to close out the final two laps," Styles said. "But she came back and ran a solid 1,500 on tired legs."

Flores would finish ninth with a time of 4:47.36 in a Division I dominated field.

The rest of the Mustangs competed in their second meet of the week at the North Texas Invitational Saturday at Fouts Field in Denton after running in the David Noble Relays Thursday in San Angelo.

"This was good for the girls who will have to run multiple events at the LSC Championships," Styles said. "They will be able to do it and not be so sore next month."

Sophomore Janel Campbell and senior Lindsey Pate posted PRs of 2:24.32 and 2:33.06 to finish 11th and 22nd in the 800-meter run while Erin Willeford and Andrea Giron ran 2:39.44 and 2:58.16, respectively.

Freshman Michelle Krezonoski was among four runners to post PRs in the 1,500-meter run by finishing 10th with a time of 4:56.10. She was followed by Kim Krezonoski (5:07.59), Melody Caldwell (5:14.20) and Heather Owens 5:32.21 for personal records while sophomore Cara Mack had a season-best showing of 5:18.09.

Freshman Sara Cuba and Whitney Frie posted a 5:18.10 and 6:02.19 respectively.

MSU's 4x400-meter relay team of Mickey Brown, Mack, Michelle Krezonoski and Emily Saville finished 14th with a time of 4:33.69.
