WICHITA FALLS, Texas – For the first time in school history, the Midwestern State women have qualified as a team for the NCAA Division II Golf Championships.
 
The Mustangs, ranked 12th in the latest NGCA Division II poll and 17th nationally by Golfstat, are the fourth seed in Super Region 4, or the West Region.  The Super Regional begins on Sunday, May 6 and continue to Tuesday, May 8 at the Wigwam Resort's Heritage (Red) Course in Litchfield, Ariz.
 
Playing in just their third season, the Mustangs will compete against eight other teams for the right to advance to the national tournament May 16-19 at the Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Ky., as part of the 2012 NCAA Division II Spring Championships Festival.
 
"I am just so proud of what these ladies have accomplished this season," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray.  "This group can win the regional."
 
Joining MSU is top-seeded and super region host Grand Canyon (Ariz.), along with second seed St. Edward's (Texas) and third seed Tarleton State.  Cal State-Monterey Bay is the fifth seed, followed by Northeastern State (Okla.), Sonoma State (Calif.), Central Oklahoma and West Texas A&M.
 
Four individuals qualified for NCAA play from the West.  Mercedes Rios of Dallas Baptist, joined by Linzi Allan of Newman (Kan.), Rebecka Surteval of Arkansas Tech and Flower Castillo of Incarnate Word.
 
The top three teams and top three individuals not with one of those teams will advance to the national tourney.
