TROPHY CLUB, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs held their ground on Tuesday in the 2012 Firestone Lone Star Conference Golf Championships.  The Mustangs posted a 293 in the final round to place third with a 9-over-par 873.
 
Cameron won the conference title at 1-under 863, 11 strokes better than MSU, with Abilene Christian in second at 867.
 
"We played well but we couldn't make up any ground," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray.  "You've got to hand it to Cameron and ACU.  They played very well."
 
MSU freshman Derek Oland led the way for the Mustangs, earning All-Tournament honors by firing an even-par 72 in the final round for a 1-over 217 that tied for fifth.
 
Senior Trevor Arianna just missed all-tournament honors with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to tie for seventh at 2-over 218, while junior Sam Smith fired a 1-under 71 to tie for ninth at 3-over 219.
 
"Derek had another strong tournament, just like he has all season," said Ray.  "And what can you say about Trevor.  He came with us as our fifth man and nearly made the all-tournament team.  I'm very proud of him."
 
Playing with an ailing back, sophomore Jeremy LeGuen made the top 20 with an 18th place tie by shooting a 5-over 77 for a 9-over 225.  Junior Raine Copeland added a 7-over 79 to finish at 226.
 
"We just didn't get a quality fourth score today," said Ray.  "Hopefully we can get healthy and regroup for the regional."
 
The Mustangs, ranked 37th nationally by Golfstat and fifth in the South Central Region, are expected to earn a spot in the NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Super Regional at the Jefferson City Country Club in Jefferson City, Mo., May 7-9.
