LUFKIN, Texas – The 13th ranked Midwestern State Mustangs battled high winds and a quality test of golf as they finished sixth in the SFA Ladyjack Crown Classic at the Crown Colony Country Club.
 
The Mustangs, the only NCAA Division II team in the field, finished sixth with a 1,004 after a 337 on Tuesday in the three-round event.
 
Kendra Whittley led the way for the Mustangs as she finished in a tie for 16th at 246 after an 81 in the final round.
 
"It was another tough day on an absolutely great golf course," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray.  "The wind got up, but we competed well.  We learned a lot from this tournament and it will help us get where we want to go to challenge in the conference and region."
 
Brenna Moore carded an 81 on Tuesday as well for Midwestern and finished five strokes behind Whittley in 22nd with a 251.  Lauren Romines finished 24th at 253 following an 88 in the final round.
 
Taylor Klutts suffered a 91 in the last round to drop to 259, while Lindsay Burkhart posted an 83 to finish a 268.
 
"The course requires you to play smart or you end up in very tough conditions," Ray added.  "This tournament will help us later in the year."
 
The Mustangs finished eight strokes behind Oklahoma City University who was fifth at 996.
 
Lamar claimed the team title with a 952, just five strokes ahead of Texas A&M's B team at 957 and Redlands Community College at 984.  Sam Houston State was fifth with a 986.
 
The Mustangs placed ahead of six teams in the field, including Texas-Pan American and host Stephen F. Austin.
 
The MSU women compete again next week in Charlotte, N.C., in the Dana Rader Intercollegiate hosted by Pfeiffer.
