WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Freshman
Brenna Moore finished one stroke out of the lead, but the rest of the Midwestern State women struggled Tuesday in the only round of the weather-shortened MSU Invitational at the Champions Course at Weeks Park.
Moore posted a 1-over-par 73 on the 6,112 yard Champions track to tie for fifth, just one stroke off the four-way tie at even-par 72.
Dallas Baptist's Mercedes Rios was named the champion after a scorecard playoff, with Alisa White and Eva Rogers of West Texas A&M and Taylor Neidy of Central Oklahoma were officially tied for second all after shooting par golf.
"Brenna had another great tournament," said MSU Coach
Jeff Ray. "She had a great ball striking day and played well."
But the rest of the Mustangs didn't perform as well, posted a team total of 313 for fifth place.
West Texas A&M won the team event with a 10-over 298, followed by Central Oklahoma at 302, Newman (Kan.) at 310 and Texas A&M-Commerce at 312 before MSU in the 17 team field.
Kendra Whittley was the only other Mustang in the 70s as she shot a 78, while
Taylor Klutts turned in an 80.
Lauren Romines added an 82, with
Lindsay Burkhart an 84.
MSU played Brittney Smith as an individual, not counting in the team score, finishing in the Top 20 with a 5-over-77.
"It wasn't our best golf as a team. Several of the girls have been sick and the conditions didn't do them well. We're looking forward to next week in Grand Prairie."
MSU plays in Northwood University's Bluebonnet Classic at the Tangle Ridge Golf Course next Monday and Tuesday.
