Mustangs finish third, two strokes off of the pace at the MSU Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs finished two strokes behind the tie at first, while freshman Derek Oland finished second a stroke off the lead in the rained-shortened MSU Invitational Tuesday at the Wichita Falls Country Club.

Oland fired an 1 over-par 72 on the 6,822 yard WFCC course to finish second individually, just behind Santiago Quintero of St. Edward's who shot an even-par 71.

The Mustangs as a team posted a 300, two strokes behind Arkansas Tech and St. Ed's who tallied 298 each.  A-Tech got the win using the fifth man's score to break the tie.

MSU tied with Cameron in third, with WT fifth at 304.

The storms and rain chopped the tournament to the lone Tuesday round and caused every shot to be intensified.

"We  had a chance to win," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray.  "The guys are battling on every shot in challenging conditions.  I'm really proud of Derek Oland who really had a great round on a very difficult day."

Jeremy LeGuen carded a 3-over-74 to rank tie ninth, while Raine Copeland shot a 4-over-75 to tie for 17 th.

Trevor Arianna added an 8-over-79 and Sam Smith stumbled to an 84.  Brett Perry played as an individual, scoring a 77, but did not count on the team score.

"Sam is struggling," Ray stated.  "But I expect him to be okay because he works so hard."

Midwestern State returns to the course next week at the North Alabama Spring Classic, hosted by UNA at the Fightin' Joe Course of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals.
