ALLEN, Texas - Midwestern State claimed a share of its sixth Lone Star Conference title with Saturday night's win over Eastern New Mexico Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
And Tuesday night, the Mustangs tasted the fruits of their labor.
First-year coach
Nelson Haggerty was named LSC Coach of the Year after guiding MSU to a 23-3 season, while senior guard
Michael Loyd gained first-team accolades and senior guard
Keonte' Logan shared the league's top defensive honor with Incarnate Word's Shaun Umeh. Senior forward
David Terrell and junior guard
JaMichael Rivers earned honorable mention.
Loyd leads the Mustangs averaging 13.1 points, 3.7 assists and 2.9 rebounds a game as the team's floor general. The 6-1 Las Vegas product has tallied 10-or-more points in 20 games and dished out at least five assists on seven occasions this season.
Loyd was an All-LSC second-team pick in 2009-10 and named to the NCAA Division II All-South Central Regional All-Tournament Team while helping the Mustangs to their second consecutive Elite Eight appearance.
Logan is noted as one of the best defenders in all of NCAA Division II, but has also gained respect as a deadly 3-point marksman. The Wichita Falls native has closed strong by hitting 18-of-24 from the arc of the final 10 games of the season. He averages 4.7 points, 3.4 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. The all-around performer rates among the nation's best in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Terrell ranks among the best finishers in the nation as the 6-5 forward from Houston tops the team with 39 dunks this season and is the LSC leader in field goal percentage at just under 70 percent.
He has logged four double-double this season while averaging 9.8 points and 6.3 boards in 18.4 minutes a game.
As one of the more explosive scorers in the LSC, Rivers is third on the squad averaging 10.6 points a game. The junior guard from Tuscaloosa, Ala. erupted for 16 of his season-high 30-point outburst in the final eight minutes to help the Mustangs erase a 12-point deficit to beat Angelo State 65-61 last December in San Angelo.
Midwestern State opens the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament Wednesday night against Texas A&M-Commerce at the Allen Events Center. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.
