SAN ANTONIO – The Midwestern State Mustangs had little trouble in rolling their record to 3-2 overall this spring as they handed the St. Mary's Rattlers an 8-1 thumping in the Alamo City on Wednesday.
The Mustangs dropped only one point, the No. 1 singles, in sending St. Mary's to 0-5 on the year.
"We made a change dropping
Mario Urban at the top of the lineup before the singles play," MSU Coach
Scott Linn said. "But we did very well by moving everyone up and it was a great team win."
The Mustangs swept the doubles to start the match, led by the No. 1 team of Urban and
Colby Meeks beating Marcin Marczewski and Jake Williams 9-7.
The No. 2 team of
Jarrod Liston and
Tomas Grejtak took little time in beating Nestor Moreno and Carlos Olea 8-1, while the No. 3 team of
Rory de Boer and
Kacper Boborykin downed Michael Ortiz and Mateo Marinez 8-2.
St. Mary's got the top singles point as Meeks fell to Marczewski in a tie break second set 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
But MSU rolled through the rest of the lineup.
De Boer downed Williams at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-0, with Bobrykin beating Moreno 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3.
Liston won at No. 4 over Olea 6-1, 7-5, with Grejtak winning at No. 5 over Ortiz 6-2, 6-1.
Jay Henton moved into the No. 6 singles spot for the Mustangs to beat Martinez 6-3, 7-5.
The Mustangs are in action again on Saturday for their home opener against Cowley County (Kan.) in men's and women's action starting at 10 a.m.
