Results

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Midwestern State turned in a phenomenal round of team golf Tuesday, led by freshman Derek Oland, to win the 2012 Spring Cardinal Classic hosted by Incarnate Word at The Club at Sonterra North Course.

Oland won the individual title by five strokes, firing a one-under-par 71 in the final round for a seven-over 223, beating Incarnate Word's John Paul Taylor at 11-over 229.

As a team, the Mustangs tallied a three-over 291 for the final round for a 908 on the rugged North Course, bettering host UIW by 29 stokes.  St. Mary's was third at 938, followed by Newman (Kan.) at 957 and UIW's Red Team at 1,017.

A pair of Mustangs tied for third as Raine Copeland, who also fired a one-under 71 on Tuesday, and Jeremy LeGuin posted 13-over 229.

The Mustangs placed all five of their scoring team members in the tournament's top 10, with Sam Smith placing sixth after a one-over 73 for a 232 and Brett Perry tied for 10th at 235 following a five-over 76.

MSU also had two individuals in the competition.  Trevor Arianna finished 13th overall at 238 after an 80 on Tuesday, while Antonio Herran tied for 14th after a 79 to total 239.

"Our kids did a really great job today," said Mustangs Coach Jeff Ray.  "All five were in control of their mental game and did a really great job managing a tough, tough golf course."

The Mustangs mentor really praised the play of Oland, the freshman from McKinney/Boyd who won the tournament by five strokes despite taking a 10 in the second round one a hole.

"Derek played great and kept his head," Ray stated.  "This course is very tough and you can't lose focus.  He just shrugged off that hole and kept going."

It was the Mustangs first tournament win of the 2011-12 season as they begin Spring play, picking up where they left off after placing second in their final tournament of the fall.

"We're getting better as a team and really showing maturity," Ray said.

MSU is back in action March 5-6 in Austin at the St. Edward's Invitational at the Grey Rock Golf Club.
