SAN ANTONIO - Derek Oland and Jeremy LeGuen carded a pair of solid rounds to pace Midwestern State to the top of the team leader board after the first day of the three-round Spring Cardinal Classic played at the Par-72, 7,006-yard North Course of The Club at Sonterra.
 
The Mustangs recorded rounds of 305 and 312 for a two-round total of 617 (+41) to hold a narrow one-stroke lead over St. Mary's (311-307  618) while Incarnate Word (315-315  630), Newman (325-319 644) and Incarnate Word Red (330-348 678) fill out the five-team tournament.
 
Oland, a freshman from McKinney, and LeGuen, a sophomore from Highland Village, are tied for third heading into Tuesday's final round with two-round totals of 152 (+8) just three strokes off the pace of individual leader Chris Becker (St. Mary's), who fired rounds of 72 and 77 for a two-round total of 149 (+5).
 
Junior Raine Copeland is tied for sixth with rounds of 81 and 77 for a total of 158 (+14), while junior Sam Smith (79-80) and senior Brett Perry (77-82) carded two-round totals of 159 (+15).
 
Senior Trevor Arianna (77-81 158) and junior Antonio Herran (78-82 160) stand sixth and 16th while competing as individual medalists.
 
The final round of the Spring Cardinal Classic is set to begin Tuesday morning.
