Mustangs open 5th in first regional ranking release of 2011-12

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs are ranked fifth in the first NCAA Division II South Central Region rankings released Wednesday by the NCAA.
 
The Mustangs (18-5) are just behind Tarleton State (18-6) for the season.  Monday night's 66-61 loss to the TexAnns was after the ranking period closed, so did not figure into the current rankings.
 
Pittsburg State (Kan.) with a 20-2 record in Division II and an in-region record of 20-2, is the top ranked team.  Northeastern State (Okla.) (20-3, 15-3) is ranked second, with Washburn (Kan.) (18-4, 15-4) third.
 
After Tarleton and MSU, Emporia State (Kan.) (17-5, 15-5) is sixth, with Central Missouri (15-6, 15-6) seventh and Arkansas Tech (16-3, 16-3) eighth.  West Texas A&M (14-7, 14-6) is ninth and Newman (Kan.) (14-5, 14-5) is 10th.
 
MSU has the second most in-region wins among the ranked teams with 18, only behind Pitt State's 20.
 
The top eight teams in the region on Sunday, March 4 advance to the NCAA Division II Championship.
 
The NCAA Division II Tournament starts with the regional round Friday, March 9th through Monday, March 12th.  The champions of the eight regions advance to the Women's Elite Eight Tuesday, March 20 through Friday, March 23 at St. Mary's Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio.
