82nd Dixie Amateur Results

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Midwestern State's Derek Oland fired a 4-under 68 in the opening round of the 82nd Dixie Amateur Tuesday afternoon at the Heron Bay Golf Club.
 
The sophomore from McKinney stands tied for fifth with seven other golfers and is five strokes behind early round leader Daniel Berger of Jupiter, Fla. who carded a first-round total of 63 (-9).
 
Curtis Thompson (Coral Springs, Fla.) fired a 6-under 66 to stand second followed by Hunter O'Mahoney (Tequesta, Fla.) and Jason Roets (Hewey-in-the-Hills, Fla.) are tied for third with matching 67s.
 
The second round is set for the Palm-Aire Country Club's Cypress Course in Pompano Beach, Fla. on Wednesday followed by a third round at Woodlands Country Club's West Golf Course in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday.
 
Following a cut, the final round returns to Heron Bay on Friday.
 
The Dixie Amateur which originated in 1924 attracts a strong field of talented amateurs annually. Past champions include PGA Tour standouts Andy Bean (1975), Bruce Fleisher (1969), Lanny Wadkins (1971), Nolan Henke (1987), Len Mattiace (1984) and Jesper Parnevik (1986).
