CANYON, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs slipped to eighth overall after turning in a 297 final round in the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational Tuesday.
The Mustangs got a sixth place finish by freshman
Santiago Gomez who fired a 3-under-par 68 in the final round on the par 71, 6,492 yard Tascosa Golf Club layout. Gomez posted a 1-under 212 to finish three strokes behind tournament individual champ Kirby Gorzell of St. Mary's who tallied a 4-under 209. Colorado Mines' Michael Lee and St. Edward's Jose Hernandez were tied for second at 3-under 210.
"Santiago had a very good tournament," said MSU Coach
Jeff Ray. "He was in control of his game. He made a few mistakes, but he had some great shots as well. If he keeps playing like that he has a chance to be the Freshman of the Year in our conference."
Derek Oland carded a 3-over 74 on Tuesday to finish in the top 20 at 17th at 3-over 216.
Jeremy LeGuen finished with a 223 after an 80 in the final round, while
Raine Copeland posted a 76 for a 231.
Ian Gallagher counted a 79 for a 233.
Playing as an individual,
Cody Rozales recorded a 78 on Tuesday to finish at 226.
The Mustangs finished the tournament tied for eighth with Incarnate Word at 877, one stroke better than tournament host West Texas A&M. The tournament was won by Colorado Mines with a 4-over 856, who edged Colorado State-Pueblo at 857 by one stroke and St. Mary's at 858 by two.
"Our play this week was a bit disappointing because it was a big regional event," said Ray. "But this team is capable of putting it all together. We had outstanding individual scores in each round, we just weren't consistent."
The Mustangs conclude fall season play on Nov. 5-6 at The Classic hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce at the Tribute Golf Club in The Colony.
