SEGUIN, Texas – The Midwestern State men's and women's tennis teams claimed three flight titles and played in two others at the third annual Doc Skogman Invitational hosted by Texas Lutheran on Friday and Saturday.
MSU's
Zack Santagate won the men's D flight singles, while the Mustangs Kynzee Watson claimed the women's D flight singles and Laure Morimont took the women's F flight singles title.
Santagate won his flight by downing Weston Godsey of East Texas Baptist 6-0, 6-0, then defeating St. Mary's Mateo Martinez 6-2, 6-2 to reach the final. Santagate took the flight with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Laird Beaty of LeTourneau.
Watson opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Temple College's Amanda Fouts, then took out Elisha Bryant of St. Mary's 6-3, 6-3. Watson won the title with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Nika Juricic of North Central Texas.
Morimont faced Texas A&M-Kingsville's Ashton Garcia in the opening round and won 6-2, 6-0. She beat Prairie View A&M's Erika Bond 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals and took out Jacksonville's Britney Sibley 6-0, 6-1 in the final.
Mitch Beenhakker made it to the final of the Men's E flight before falling to Prairie View's Trenton Johnson 6-0, 6-2. Beenhakker got there by downing St. Mary's Brian Chowaniec 1-6, 6-1, 10-6, then taking down Our Lady of the Lakes Kuda Sengai 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinal.
In the women's doubles, the team of Fatima Clementino and Payton Scharfenberg reached the A flight finals, falling in the final to St. Edward's Alexandra Khadhzyan and Paige Rachel 8-5. The team beat UT-Permian Basin's Krissy Chavez and Olivia Baltazar 8-1, then downed North Central Texas' Cassidy Crawford and Jordan Chandler 8-6 in the semis.
Clementino took the consolation final in the women's A flight singles. After dropping a 6-1, 3-6, 10-5 decision to St. Edward's Khadhzyan, Clementino downed NCTC's Crawford 6-4, 7-6 (4) and Temple's Dominique Bruce 6-3, 6-1.
Scharfenberg placed third in the women's C flight singles by defeating St. Ed's Samantha Siegel 6-4, 1-6, 10-4. She won her opening round match against UTPB's Casey Acosta 6-3, 6-1 and lost in the semis to Prairie View's Christine Gwodog 4-6, 7-5, 10-4.
The team of Watson and Morimont won its opening match in the women's B flight doubles over Prairie View's Gwodog and Bond 8-2, but lost in the semis to eventual winner Rafaela Haegele and Florence Boinon of St. Edward's 9-7.
On the men's side, Logan Smith lost in the semifinals of the men's A flight singles to University of the Southwest's Marek Ondruj 6-3, 6-2 after taking his first match against St. Mary's Jared Fellows 6-3, 6-1. Smith won the third place match in a walkover against Our Lady of the Lake's Luis Rovira.
Jay Henton went to the semis of the men's C singles beating Temple's Aaron Longoria 6-4, 6-1, but falling to St. Mary's Matt Banner 6-2, 4-6, 10-8. Henton placed fourth in the flight with a loss to Daniel Vasquez of Prairie View 6-4, 6-7 (5), 11-9.
In men's doubles play, Smith and Santagate defeated LeTourneau's Beaty and Carlos Cantu 8-5 in the A flight, but lost in the semis to St. Mary's Brien Galon and Banner 8-4.
In the C flight, Henton and Beenhakker fell to OLLU's Sengai and Tanis Martinez 9-8 (4), but came back with an 8-4 win over Jacksonville's Johnathan Taylor and Daniel Apacible 8-4.
The Midwestern teams will be in action again at the Collin Invitational in Plano on Friday and Saturday.
