LAWTON, Okla. – The Midwestern State Mustangs burned up the Fort Sill Golf Club on Tuesday firing a final round 3-over-par 291 as a team to win the Oklahoma Intercollegiate.
 
MSU, ranked seventh by GolfStat and 18th in the GolfWorld/WGCA poll, took down six-time defending West Region Tarleton State by five strokes, posting a 10-over 586 to the TexAnns 591.  Central Oklahoma was third at 594.  Tarleton is No. 8 in the coaches poll and No. 9 in GolfStat, while UCO is 12th in the coaches poll and 16th in GolfStat.
 
"It was a great tournament for us," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray.  "We took advantage of the opportunity we had against a quality field.  The girls stayed in focus and did a great job."
 
The Mustangs were led by sophomore Brenna Moore of Burkburnett who fired a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish second at 2-under 142.
 
Moore finished a stroke behind Tarleton's Jacqueline Lau, who posted a 3-under 69 to win at 3-under 141.  UCO's Taylor Neidy was tied with Moore at 2-under 142.
 
"Brenna was outstanding from tee-to-green today," said Ray.  "She was driving the ball really well and reached the par 5s in two."
 
MSU also got an even-par 72 from senior Taylor Klutts of Lake Kiowa/Callisburg.  She finished 16th at 7-over 151.
 
"She was very impressive with her round," Ray added.  "Her putting is her strength and she had a great day."
 
Wall senior Kendra Whittley carded a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish sixth at 2-over 146 for the Mustangs.
 
"Kendra gave us a solid score.  She had one bad hole, but came back with a good round," the MSU coach said.
 
The Mustangs also got a 3-over 75 in the final round from senior Lindsay Burkhart from Grapevine, who finished in 10th at 6-over 150, and a 6-over 78 from senior Lauren Romines of Lake Kiowa/Callisburg who finished in 26th at 10-over 154.
 
"It took a great team effort to win a tournament of this caliber," Ray stated.  "We needed four quality scores and got them.
 
In fact, the Mustangs did not record an 80 in the tournament, including individual players Kynze Mann with her 77 and 154 total and Brittany Smith who carded a 79 for 157.
 
The Mustangs ended the fall season with the win, giving MSU three seconds and a win in the four tournaments played.
 
MSU returns to action this spring, opening with the Las Vegas Desert Classic at the Revere Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.
