LAWTON, Okla. – Led by sizzling even-par 72 rounds from Kendra Whittley and Brenna Moore, the Midwestern State Mustangs share the first round lead of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate at the Fort Sill Golf Club.
 
The Mustangs, ranked seventh in the latest GolfStat rankings and 18th in the latest Golf World/WGCA coaches poll, posted a team score of 295 to match Tarleton State, who is ranked ninth in GolfStat and eighth in the coaches poll.
 
Host Cameron is third at 301, while Central Oklahoma (12th in coaches poll, 16th in GolfStat) is fourth at 302.
 
"The girls played well today," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray.  "We've tried to get in position to take that next step with our team and this is a great way to do it."
 
Moore, a sophomore from Burkburnett, picked up birdies on two of the last four holes played and just missed a birdie putt to close the round at even-par.
 
Whittley, a senior from Wall, opened with a bogey, but quickly settled in to join the tie for second at even with Moore, Tarleton's Jacqueline Lau and Western Texas' Stephanie Bertelsen.
 
UCO's Taylor Neidy fired a 2-under 70 on the par 72, 5,921-yard Fort Sill course to lead individually.
 
"They both came through in tough conditions," Ray added.  "Kendra and Brenna played well."
 
Ray noted that the tournament opened in windy conditions, but then added rain and higher winds midway through the round before giving way to beautiful conditions with three holes left.
 
"The team showed a lot of maturity through the weather.  They really stayed in focus," Ray said.
 
The Mustangs have two others in the top 20 after the first round as Lindsay Burkhart posted a 3-over 75 for 13th and Lauren Romines carded a 4-over 76 for 16th.  Taylor Klutts turned in a 7-over 79.
 
MSU also has a pair of individuals playing in the tournament.  Kynze Mann is through one round at 24 with a 5-over 77 and Brittany Smith is 28th after an 6-over 78.
 
The final round of the last fall tournament for the Mustangs is Tuesday.
