Mustangs take six flight titles at Collin Open

PLANO, Texas – The Midwestern State tennis teams claimed three single flights and three doubles flights at the 24th Collin College Fall Open last weekend at the Collin Tennis Complex.
 
Senior Luke Joyce won the men's flight 1 singles, while freshman Madeline Schorlemmer won the women's flight 4 singles and freshman Laure Morimont took the women's flight 5 singles title.
 
In doubles play, sophomores Kacper Boborykin and Tomas Grejtak won the men's flight 3, with freshmen Lauren Pineda and Schorlemmer winning the women's flight 1 and sisters Kendra and Kayla Casey winning the women's flight 3.
 
Joyce took the top spot in men's flight 1 by beating TCU's Rodolfo Bustamante 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the final.  Joyce had overcome SMU's Mischa Nowicki 2-6, 7-6, 10-8 in the semifinals.  He defeated Collin's Oscar von Koch 6-3, 6-0 and opened with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Texas-Dallas' Matt Davis.
 
Schorlemmer needed three sets to take Arkansas-Fort Smith's Amy Belanger 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the flight 4 final.  She advanced by taking Dallas Baptist's Leah Smith 6-3, 6-2 in the semis after dispatching Southeastern Oklahoma's Elba Haugen 6-2, 6-0 and McMurry's Sonia Del Hierro 6-0, 6-0.
 
Morimont also needed three sets for the win in the flight 5 final, beating Arkansas Tech's Nina Greenway 6-4, 1-6, 10-4.  She outdistanced her way to the final by downing Arkansas-Fort Smith's Kristen Cox 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinal after beating Brandy Curry of McMurry 6-1, 6-2 and Alisha Lorren of UT-Dallas 6-0, 6-0.
 
In the men's flight 3 doubles, top seeded Boborykin/Grejtak beat Dillon Eizembur and George Rivers of Tyler Junior College 8-5 to win the flight.  The downed Filipe Cruz and Preston Steblein of McMurry 8-5 in the semifinals and opened with an 8-2 triumph over Collin's Trevor Gittinger and Michael Mabe in the quarters.
 
Pineda and Schorlemmer carried the top seed in the women's flight 1 and held it with an 8-4 finals win over Natalie Gennissen and Amanda Richter of Dallas Baptist.  The duo dispatched Southeastern's Andrea Georgescu and Sabina Mardarenko 8-2 and Arkansas Tech's Maria Aleman and Bohdana Sardak 8-4.
 
The Casey sisters were also a top seed in women's flight 3 and lost only four games in winning the flight.  Casey and Casey beat Dallas Baptist's Leah Rutt and Lindsay Wilkerson 8-2 in the final, took out Greenway and Laura Sanchez of Arkansas Tech 8-1 in the semis and opened with an 8-1 triumph over Cindy and Mindy Tiu of UTD.
 
"I am absolutely pleased with the way we played," said MSU Coach Scott Linn.  "We finished strong and our execution from practice is showing up in the matches.  Especially in the pressure situations."
 
In other women's play, Kendra Casey played into the semifinals of flight 2 singles action, beating Southeastern's Mardarenko 6-0, 6-1 and A-Tech's Aleman 6-2, 6-1 before falling in the semifinal to Tyler JC's Alejandra Enderica 6-3, 6-2.
 
Kendra Casey also player in flight 2, beating Nika Juricic of North Central Texas 6-3, 6-1, then losing to UA-Fort Smith's Monique Melton 6-2, 6-3 in the quarters.
 
Junior Fatima Clementino reached the semis of flight 3 singles  before falling to Masa Podunavac 7-5, 2-6, 13-11.  She had beaten Sharron Clark of Collin 6-1, 6-1 and Jessica Velasquez of ATU 6-3, 6-2.
 
Pineda lost her opening quarterfinal match to ATU's Sardak 6-4, 3-6, 10-5, but beat Becky Faber of Tabor 8-1 in the consolations before bowing out to Tyler's Kylie Reynaud 8-4.
 
And the team of Clementino/Morimont fell in the quarters of flight 2 doubles 8-4 to Melton/Podnunavac of UAFS.
 
On the men's side, Kyle Davidson and Jarrod Liston made the final in flight 2 of doubles but dropped an 8-5 decision to Fort Smith's Clay Sandefur and Matt Tabler.  They defeated top seeded Evan Bechtel and Nate Lammons of SMU 8-5 in the semis.  The team also beat Matt Davis and Guil Portela of UT-Dallas 8-5 and Dallas Baptist's Austin Serrett and Nathan Wilson 8-0.
 
Boborykin lost in the semifinals of flight 4 singles to SMU's Lammons 3-6, 6-2, 14-12.  He beat Casjen Rico of McMurry 6-3, 6-7, 10-5 and Southeastern Oklahoma's Filip Pavlovic 6-2, 6-3.
 
Grejtak was a semifinalist in flight 5 singles, falling to UAFS' Cris Ramirez 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.  Grejtak downed Mitch Vechione of Seminole State (Okla.) 6-4, 6-2 and Collin's Chad Ashing 6-0, 6-0.
 
Davidson also reached the semis in flight 6 singles, falling to Tyler's Mitch Martell 6-2, 6-4.  He beat McMurry's Tom Weir 6-3, 6-1 and Aaron Dobbins of UAFS 6-3, 6-0.
 
Colby Meeks lost his opener in flight 2 to TJC's James Martell 6-3, 6-3, but stormed through the consolation bracket to win it with an 8-1 victory over Pedro Carvalho of UAFS.  He also defeated Kelyn Vix of Tabor 8-5 and Josh Minns of UTD 8-3.
 
Liston opened flight 3 singles with a win over Aramis Azucey of Seminole State 6-2, 6-3, but fell in the quarters to Lee-Shawn Stein 6-7(5), 6-4, 12-10.
 
The Joyce/Meeks doubles team lost in quarterfinal play of flight 1 to TCU's Will Stein and Blake Wiggins 8-4.  They defeated Darryn Davis and Nathan Panttaja of Tabor 8-0 in the opening round.
 
Both Mustangs programs have one final tournament for the fall at the Tyler Invitational.
 
The women play Oct. 19-20, while the men's action is Oct. 26-27.
