Cole, Flores shine at McMurry Relays

ABILENE, Texas - Midwestern State may not officially have a track team, but that didn't stop the Mustangs from stacking up four wins and a meet record Thursday afternoon at the McMurry Relays.

Senior Sydnee Cole easily outpaced the field to claim the 10,000-meter run by nearly five minutes to set a meet record with a 39:21.88.

"She just really wanted to see 25 laps on the track felt like," MSU coach Koby Styles said. "This will set her up for the next several weeks."

The Mustangs, who don't qualify to run in the Lone Star Conference Championships, finish an abbreviated slate with the Angelo State meet next week before closing at the Kansas Relays.

Freshman Ashley Flores improved her personal best by eight seconds in the 1,500-meter run striking gold with a time of 4:45.94 and was followed by teammates Janel Campbell (3rd/5:00.99), Lindsey Pate (5:20.48) and Melody Caldwell (5:25.01).

"Ashley was amazing," Styles said. "I felt like she had a really good shot at winning and she kept pulling and pulling away and also had a shot at the meet record but fell .2 of second short."

Flores also claimed gold in the 800-meter run with the team's season best time of 2:25.07 while Campbell logged a 2:30.27 good for seventh place to edge Caldwell, who crossed the line in 2:32.99.

The Mustangs also produced a stellar showing in the 5,000-meter run as freshman Cara Mack took gold with a 19:29.00 while sophomore Heather Owens was third with a 22:12.76.

Midwestern finished the meet seventh with a total of 54 points to place just behind LSC members West Texas A&M (65) and Texas A&M-Commerce (60).

"Anytime you can finish close to the top five and only bring seven runners to a meet, you know you've had a good day," Styles said. "I couldn't be happier with the performance today."
