WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State maintained its hold on the top ranking in the South Central Region Wednesday afternoon as released by the NCAA Division II Softball Committee.
The Mustangs moved to 39-5 with a split Tuesday night at Texas Woman's University, but has still been victorious in 12 of their last 14 games.
Midwestern leads a strong contingent from the Lone Star Conference as the league laid claim to six of the top nine spots in the ranking.
Not much changed at the top as No. 2 Angelo State (33-5), No. 3 Emporia State (30-7), No. 4 Nebraska-Omaha (34-6), No. 5 West Texas A&M (30-11), No. 6 St. Mary's (29-15) and No. 7 Southeastern Oklahoma (30-17) all maintained their respective posts.
Incarnate Word (21-18) moved into the rankings at No. 8 while Central Oklahoma (21-17) and Missouri Western (27-8) round out the rankings at Nos. 9 and 10.
The top eight teams advance to the 2011 NCAA Division II South Central Regional which will be played in two four-team, double elimination tournaments at campus sites during the weekend of May 13-15.
The advancing teams in a best 2-of-3 super regional at the site of the highest remaining seed on May 21-22 for the right to play in the 2011 NCAA Division II Softball Championships to be held from May 26-30 at Moyer Complex in Salem, Va.
Midwestern State and Central Oklahoma meet in a three-game series this weekend at Mustangs Park.
The teams play a single game Friday at 3 p.m. before finishing the set with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.
