GRANBURY, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs maintained their position in the final round of the George "Doc" Housewright Invitational, finishing 13th in the 20 team field that featured 10 of the National Golf Coaches Association Top 25 Division II teams.
The Mustangs posted a second round total of 328 at the Harbor Lakes Golf Club, 11 strokes better than Monday, but held steady with a two round total of 667.
"In a field like this, you 're going to have to score in the low 300s to do well," said MSU Coach
Jeff Ray.
Sophomore
Taylor Klutts led the way for MSU, finishing 21st with a 14-over 158 after an 80 on Tuesday. Sophomore
Kendra Whittley had the day's low round for the Mustangs with a seven-over 79 on the par 72, 5,790 yard course to finish 25th at 16-over 160.
"For them, that's average golf and we've put a lot of pressure on them this year," Ray noted. "Kendra has been shooting 72 and 73 every time out and has really been hot. Without her doing that, it's hard for us to have a great tournament."
Lauren Romines put up a 173 for the tournament with an 84 on Tuesday, while senior
Kyla Whittley turned in an 86 for a 177 and
Megan Richardson and 85 for 178.
Playing as an individual, MSU's
Lindsay Burkhart fired a seven-over 79 for a 165 two-day total.
Led by Carla Cooper's four-under 68 on Tuesday, host Tarleton State outdistanced the field to win the Invitational with a 592 team score. The TexAnns were 19 strokes better than second-place Grand Canyon (Ariz.) at 611. St. Edward's was third at 619, while California (Pa.) and Northeastern State (Okla.) were fourth at 626.
Cooper was the tournament individual champ. Her two-under 142 led a 1-2-3 finish for TSU. Katy Ward was second a three-over 147 and Jacqueline Lau third at four-over 148.
The Mustangs now prepare for next week's Lone Star Conference Championships, next Monday through Wednesday at The Republic Golf Club in San Antonio.
