DALLAS - Midwestern State just kept getting better over the opening 36 holes at the Audible Closed Championship Monday afternoon at the Par-72, 5,727-yard course at The Golf Club of Dallas.

Each player improved from the first to the second as the Mustangs notched team rounds of 320 and a tournament-best 301 for a total of 621 and head into Tuesday's final round seven strokes off of the pace of Redlands Community College.

"I was really suprised with how well we finished after walking two rounds," MSU coach Jeff Ray said. "But the girls performed very well. They were focused and played great golf to get into position to win the golf tournament."

The Mustangs hold an 11-stroke lead over a pack of regional opponents which includes West Texas A&M (632), Dallas Baptist (633), Central Oklahoma (635) and Drury (637) while Texas A&M-Commerce (665) and Rogers State (725) round out the field.

Many of the eight teams were orginally slated to play in the Oak Hills Invitational hosted by East Central (Okla.) which was canceled last week.

Sophomore Kendra Whittley heads into Tuesday's final round tied for second place after carding rounds of 79 and 71 for a total of 150 (+6). The Wall native is seven strokes behind tournament leading Elcin Ulu, who fired rounds of 71 and 72 for a 1-under total of 143.

MSU sophomore Taylor Klutts is tied for sixth and improved four strokes from a 79 to 75 for a 10-over total of 154, while sophomore Lauren Romines carded rounds of 81 and 76 to stand tied for ninth at 157.

Sophomore Megan Richardson is 20th with a total of 161 with scores of 81 and 80, while sopomore Lindsay Burkhart is 24th while firing rounds of 84 and 79 for a total of 163.

Competing as an individual medatlist, senior Kyla Whittley posted rounds of 81 and 86 to tie for 31st through the opening two rounds with a total of 167.
