Mustangs improve in final round of DBU Patriot Classic

DALLAS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs made an improvement in the final round of the Dallas Baptist Patriot Invitational, but so did many of the participants as the Mustangs moved up two spots to finish 14th on Tuesday.

MSU posted a team score of 294 in the final round at the Golf Club of Dallas to finish at 895, three strokes behind Northeastern State in 13th at 892.

Abilene Christian won the team event with a two-over-par 842 for the tournament after a three-over team round of 283 on Tuesday. Central Oklahoma was second, five strokes back at 847 and Oklahoma City was third at 853.

"We just haven't put it together this week," said MSU Coach Jeff Ray. "We had some guys step up, but really didn't have a good fourth or fifth."

The Mustangs were led in the final round by sophomore Sam Smith, who fired a three-under 67 in the final round to tie for 25th at 217. Freshman Jeremy LeGuen added an even-par 70 to finish a stroke behind in a tie for 27th at 218.

"Sam's distance control was great and so was his putting," said Ray. "If he keeps playing like he has, it will be a great addition to what we're doing."

Unfortunately for the Mustangs sophomore Raine Copeland stumbled to an 81 in the final round for a 229 total. Senior A.J. Pursley added a 77 for a 233, while junior Trevor Arianna carded an 80 for a 236 total.

"Raine really struggled and that's unusual for him," Ray noted. "Hopefully we'll bounce back."

ACU's Alex Carpenter won the tournament by two strokes with a five-under 205 despite a two-over 72 in the final round. Cameron's Jason Timmis posted a three-over 73 for second at three-under 207. There was a three-way tie for third between ACU's Cyril Bouniol, St. Mary's Jeff Rein and Texas Wesleyan's Joel Thelen at two-under 208.

MSU has it's final competition before the Lone Star Conference Championships next week, when they go to Edmond, Okla., for the UCO/KickingBird Classic.
