Mustangs struggle through first day at DBU Patriot Invitational

DALLAS, Texas -- The Midwestern State Mustangs struggled through the first two rounds of the Dallas Baptist Patriot Invitational on Monday.

After playing well in the first three tournaments of the spring, the Mustangs ballooned on Monday at the Golf Club of Dallas. MSU stands 16th of 20 teams in the competiton after posting a 301-300--601.

Abilene Christian leads after the first day at one-under 559, while Central Oklahoma is second, six strokes back at 565 and Oklahoma City third at 566.

"We've played good golf all year, but we really didn't today," said MSU coach Jeff Ray. "We struggled terribly on the greens. They're bermuda, really patchy and fast. We just didn't get it done on the greens."

The Mustangs were led on Monday by Raine Copeland who turned in a first round 75, but followed it a 73 to total 148, eight-over par. Jeremy LeGuen also shot a 148 in the first day, posting a 76 then firing a two-over 72.

Sam Smith posted identical 75s for a 150, while Trevor Arianna added a 75-81--156, and A.J. Pursley a 76-80--156.

Abilene Christian's Alex Carpenter is the individual leader with a seven-under 133 after blistering the course with a five-under 65 and adding a two-under 68. Cameron's Jason Timmis is a stroke back at six-under 134 and UCO's Andrew Green is two strokes back and five-under 135.

Texas Wesleyan's Joel Thelen had the round of the day with a six-under 64 in the second round after putting up a three-over 73 in the first. He's tied for fourth with Wayland Baptist's Bradley Sinnitt at three-under 137.

"This is a good regional field," remarked Ray. "We really need to cut into the stroke average tomorrow so it won't hurt us in the rankings."

The final 18-hole round is Tuesday.
