WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The Midwestern State Mustangs stand in a fourth place tie after the first day of the MSU Invitational at the Wichita Falls Country Club after posting a two-round total of 606.

The Mustangs are tied with Cameron for the number four spot, 21 strokes behind leader Oklahoma Christian who fired a 284-301—585. Northeastern State is second at 594, with Newman (Kan.) in third at 601.

Newman's Ed Herzog fired an even-par 142 to lead the tournament after 36-holes. Herzog opened with a one-over 72, then followed it with a one-under round of 70. Northeastern State's Casey Nelson is second with a 70-73—143. St. Mary's Matt Vela, Oklahoma Christian's Preston Wilkins and Texas A&M-Commerce's Patrick Russo are all knotted in third, three strokes back at 145.

The low round of the tournament was turned in by OC's Axel Ochoa who blistered the Country Club with a two-under 69 in the first round, but blew up to a 77 in the second to stand sixth at 146.

The Mustangs were paced by Raine Copeland and Sam Smith who are tied at 14th with eight-over 150. Smith opened his day with a 72 in round one, then followed with a 78. Copeland posted a 77 first round, then fired a two-over 73.

Jeremy LeGuen is one shot behind Copeland and Smith in a tie for 19 th at 151 after a 78 and 73, while Trevor Arianna carded a 156 and Antonio Herran tallied a 158.

Playing as individuals, the Mustangs Brett Perry carded a 79-75—154 to tie for 30th after the first day, while A.J. Pursley tallied a 77-79—156.

The final round of the tournament begins at 8:30 Tuesday morning.
