WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State coach
Brady Tigert has constructed a solid tradition of success since the school resurrected its softball program in 2004.
The Mustangs has amassed six NCAA South Central Regional appearances, two Lone Star Conference titles and four LSC North Division championships in its eighth season of softball.
MSU is coming off its best season in 2010 as it posted an LSC record 54 wins and fell on victory shy of its first NCAA Division II World Series appearance.
The Mustangs are off to its best start in program history this season but with the announcement of MSU's 2011 signing class, Tigert believes the future of the program is in good hands.
'I'm very excited about this class," Tigert said. "I know they will uphold the successful traditions of Midwestern softball."
The class of five includes a pair of pitching standouts and three top-notch hitters.
Healdton (Okla.) High's Lindsi Glenn and Burkburnett High's Brenna Hennan have experienced highly prep careers.
Glenn posted a 49-17 mark with a 1.09 ERA during her four prep seasons at Healdton High School where she helped the Bulldogs to four state tournament appearances.
"Lindsi is a left-handed pitcher who will keep batters off balance," Tigert said.
Brenna Hennan pitched Burkburnett High to consecutive district titles while weaving 33 shutouts and 18 no-hitters over the past two seasons for the Bulldogs.
"Brenna will be the foundation to our pitching staff next year," Tigert said.
Waco Midway High School product Kelly Schaefer headlines a trio of position players who have tasted success at the prep level.
Schaefer helped the Panthers to three deep playoff runs including a Texas Class 4A state championship in 2010. The multi-sport athlete was a part of six district champions at MHS including a three in softball and three in volleyball.
"I'm very excited about Kelley," Tigert said. "She will be an impact player from the start for us."
McKinney High's Lisa Licata displayed her versatility earning District 9-4A Utility Player of the Year honors, but is a force at the plate as well. She hit .375 with eight stolen bases last spring for the Lions before coming on strong during the summer club months hitting .418 with 16 stolen bases.
"Dynamite comes in small packages," Tigert said. "Lisa has speed, strength and talent. We expect her to be an impact player at many positions."
Burkburnett High's Brooke Hennan fills out the signing class and will give the Mustangs another solid option behind the plate where she was named District 5-3A's Catcher of the Year in 2010.
"Brooke is very talented," Tigert said. "We look forward to seeing what she can do on the field."
Midwestern State battles Texas Woman's University in its home opener Friday morning to kick off the MSU Invitational No. 1. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
