SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs improved their play in the second round of the Lone Star Conference Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday, but slipped two spots to stand ninth with one round to play.
 
The Mustangs posted a 303 in the second round to total 611. But improvement among all the teams at Randolph Air Force Base's Randolph Oaks Golf Course forced MSU back in the pack, two strokes behind East Central in eight at 309 and Northeastern State in seventh at 604.
 
Sophomore Raine Copelanded the way for MSU, firing a four-over 76 on par-72, 7,172 yard course. He's the only Mustang in the top 20, sitting in a 19th place tie at 151. Jeremy LeGuen shot the day's best with a three-over 75 to total 153, tied with Trevor Arianna who added a 79 on Tuesday.
 
Brett Perry and Sam Smith each carded 76 for the Mustangs, with Perry sitting at 157 and Smith at 162.
 
The team race became exciting, as first round leader Central Oklahoma maintained its lead, but Abilene Christian and Cameron made a run at the top. UCO sits at 580, with ACU two strokes back at 582 and Cameron seven away in third at 587.
 
Individually, Northeastern State's Casey Nelson fired a two-under-par 70 for a two round total of six-under 138. That's one stroke better than West Texas A&M's Ben Hargis and UCO's Colby Schrum who are at five-under 139. Texas A&M-Commerce's Aaron Cockerill is fourth at two-under 142 with ACU's Alex Carpenter in fifth at one-under 143.
 
The final round of the championship is Wednesday, with the Mustangs starting at 8:40 in the morning.
