SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The weather improved a bit during Tuesday's final round at the Springfield Pasta Company Invitational played at the Par-72, 7,066-yard Rivercut Golf Course.
The Mustangs improved 11 strokes from Monday's opening round and turned in the second best team round of the tournament with a team total of 301 Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn't enough to hold off Missouri-St. Louis for the team title.
"We had a solid tournament and played consistent both days," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "As the day went along, the weather got better and better. This will be a positive for us in the regional rankings."
The Mustangs notched four scores of 77 or better with sophomore
Raine Copeland leading the way with a 1-over 73 to finish tied for fifth with teammate and first round overall individual leader
Trevor Arianna, who fired a 5-over 77. Both posted totals of 152 (+8).
Sophomore
Sam Smith finished fourth as MSU's most consistent golfer of the tournament with rounds of 77 and 74 for a two-round total of 151 (+7).
Freshman
Jeremy LeGuen notched two countable rounds of 81 and 77 to tie for 22nd with a two-round total of 158 (+14), while junior
Brett Perry carded scores of 87 and 84 to finish tied for 51st with a total of 171 (+27).
Midwestern's consistent wasn't enough to deter UMSL as the Rivermen posted three Par-or-better rounds to post a tournament-best team total of 606 to best the Mustangs by seven strokes.
UMSL's Ryan Penfield claimed to individual honors winning a playoff with Missouri Western's Shane Feist. Penfield recorded scores of 76 and 72 for a 4-over total of 148.
MSU's
Antonio Herran placed 18th with rounds of 82 and 75 for a total of 157 (+13).
The Mustangs play host to the MSU Invitational week in Wichita Falls. The 18-team men's field competes Monday and Tuesday at the Wichita Falls Country Club, while the 18-team women's field is set for Monday and Tuesday at Champions Court at Weeks Park.
