FORT SMITH, Ark. -  Archer City sophomore Sam Smith came to Hardscrabble County Club as Midwestern State's sixth player, but was the best of the Mustangs on the course as he fired an opening round 73 at the semester-opening Lions Classic hosted by Arkansas-Fort Smith.

Smith, playing as an individual so his score cannot count for the team, tallied nines of 36 and 37 to tie for second with Southern Nazarene's Heinrich Frylinck, one stroke behind the two-over-72 of Newman's Riley Seitz.
 
The Mustangs suffered as a cold front blew through, dropping the temperatures from the mid 60s to the 50s.  The Mustangs posted a team round of 317, 16 strokes behind tournament leading Southern Nazarene at 301.   Oklahoma City is second at 304, with Newman third at 305 and host UA-Fort Smith fourth at 313.
 
Sophomore Antonio Herran of Medellin, Colombia, carded a five-over 75 placing him in an eighth place tie.

But the team had four 80-plus rounds, counting three, with junior Trevor Arianna posting a 10-over 80, followed by freshman Jeremy LeGuen and sophomore Raine Copeland each with 11-over 81s.  Junior Brett Perry added an 82 to round out the scoring for MSU.
 
The final round of the Mustangs first action of the spring concludes on Tuesday with a single 18-hole round.
