Mustangs save best for last, finish third at Coody West Texas Intercollegiate

ABILENE, Texas - Midwestern State turned four Par-or-better scores Tuesday afternoon on the Par-71, 6,977-yard Diamondback Golf Club to take third at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate. Chad Bryant and Travis Klutts scorched the course with matching 67s (-4), while Raine Copeland and Jeremy LeGuen carded scores of 69 (-2) and 71 (Par) respectively to push the Mustangs to a 10-under team total of 274 which was the best round by any team at the two-day, 36-hole event. The Mustangs used the performance to carve a 14-stroke deficit back to six, but still finished behind tournament champion Central Oklahoma (559, -9) and runner-up Abilene Christian (562, -6) as MSU would tally a two-round 3-under total of 565. Bryant, who fired two sub-70 rounds of 69 and 67 for a total of 136 (-6), closed two strokes behind individual medalist Zach Monson of Newman (Kan.) who posted a 134 (-8). Klutts closed the tied for fifth with a total of 137 (-5), while Copeland was 21st with a 143 (+3) and LeGuen was 44th with a 149 (+9). Sophomore Sam Smith notched rounds of 80 and 75 for a two-round total of 155 (+15) to finish tied for 67th. Midwestern State next competes in the Texoma Championships from Oct. 4-5 at the Chickasaw Point Golf Club in Kingston, Okla.
