KINGSTON, Okla. – Midwestern State's
Travis Klutts scorched the Chickasaw Pointe Golf Resort Tuesday afternoon, making a charge for an individual title.
But the Lake Kiowa senior settled for the second-best round of the day and a fourth place finish as he led the Mustangs to fourth place as a team at the Texoma Championships.
Klutts toured the 7,085 yard course with a two-under-par 70 Tuesday for a 54-hole total of one-over-par 217.
"He played well," said MSU Golf Coach
Jeff Ray. "He didn't realize he was that close to the lead. But he's steady. He consistently gets in the top five."
Oklahoma Christian's trio of Axel Ochoa, Vilhelm Bogstrand and Oscar Stark tied for the individual lead at one-under 215 and paced OCU to the team title as well.
Ochoa fired the day's best round with a three-under 69.
The Mustangs carded a collective 302 in Tuesday's final round to finish fourth with a 909, three strokes better than East Central. OCU led the way at one-under 863, well ahead of second place St. Mary's (Texas) 899 and Cameron's 900 in third.
"We struggled hitting fairways as a team," Ray began. "That course makes you hit the fairways and by struggling it hurt us."
Freshman
Jeremy LeGuen turned in a four-over 76 to tie for 13th at 226 (+11), that included bogies on the last three holes coming in.
"Jeremy is very talented," Ray stated. "He slipped coming in. When he learns how to finish he'll be a great player."
Sophomore
Raine Copeland added a 76 today to finish with a 228 (+12), good for a tie at 17. Junior
Brett Perry posted an 80 for a 237 total (+21), while junior
Chad Bryant carded an 83 to finish at 254 (+38).
Junior
Trevor Arianna shot a 79 for a 54-hole total of 231, with
Antonio Herran fired a 77 for a 234 total. Both played as individual medalists in the tournament.
MSU is in action again next Monday and Tuesday at the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational at the PGA National Champion course at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
