KINGSTON, Okla. - Midwestern State might have had a sense of déjà' vu in the opening rounds of the Texoma Classic Monday afternoon at the Par-72, 7,085-yard Chickasaw Golf Resort.
Just like season, the Mustangs struggled to a fifth-place showing through the opening two rounds, but recovered to card a 294 (+6) in the second round after slogging through an opening round 314 (+26).
"I don't know what it was, but no one was making anything happen and we had no momentum," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "I've never seen a team struggle like I watched us struggle this morning. It was just one of those days."
The Mustangs were 7th after the opening two rounds at the same tournament a season ago.
Junior
Travis Klutts, sophomore
Raine Copeland and freshman
Jeremy LeGuen fought their way to matching 78s (+6) in the morning round while junior
Brett Perry fired a countable round of 80 (+8) and junior
Chad Bryant, who has been recovering from illness, carded an 86 (+14).
Each would improve in the second round led by Klutts who carded a 2-under 70 to work his way into the Top 10 at eighth with a two-round total of 148 (+4).
LeGuen finished with a 73 in the second round and will go into Tuesday's final round tied for 13th with a total of 151 (+7), while Copeland notched a 74 (+2) for 16th (152/_8), Perry recorded a 77 (+5) for 30th (157/+13) and Bryan carded an 85 (+13) for 49th (171/+27).
The workmanlike effort helped the Mustangs move into striking distance of every team with the exception of tournament leading Oklahoma Christian.
The Bison used rounds of 286 and 288 for a 2-under total of 574 to carve a comfortable 23-stroke lead over second-place Cameron (597/+21).
OBU owns four of the top five spots on the individual leader board heading into the final round which includes individual leader Oscar Stark, who fired rounds of 72 and 67 for a two-round total of 139 (-5).
MSU is 11 strokes behind the Aggies, seven behind St. Mary's (601/+25) and two in back of fourth-place East Central (606/+30).
"We played better in the second round, but really dug ourselves a hole," Ray said. "No one was making anything happen. We just hope to bounce back and see if we can gain ground on people."
Junior
Trevor Arianna fired rounds of 79 and 73 and is 16th with a two-round score of 152 (+8), while
Antonio Herran carded scores of 78 and 79 for a total of 157 (+13) to place 30th while competing as individual medalists.
