PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Midwestern State fared well against tough competition in the NSU Shark Invitational at the equally tough Par-72, 7,048-yard PGA National-Champions Course.
Just not well enough as the Mustangs settled for a 12th place showing Tuesday afternoon in the field of 15.
"The boys just didn't have a good day," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said. "No one played just terrible, but the pins were in tough positions and we just didn't putt very well."
Sophomore
Raine Copeland was the Mustangs' top individual finisher following up a pair of even-Par 72 with a 78 (+6) to finish 21st with a total score of 222 (+6).
Senior
Travis Klutts delivered MSU best score of the final round with a 77 (+5) to follow tallies of 72 and 74 on Monday to close with a total of 223 (+7) and tied for 26th.
Juniors
Brett Perry (78-77-79) and
Chad Bryant (78-78-78) tied for 50th with a total of 234 (+18), while freshman
Jeremy LeGuen (74-82-79) tallied a 235 (+19) to finish 53rd.
"We didn't play very poorly, but with this field you just have to play better," Ray said. "It was a really good experience for us."
Lynn's Jose Joia claimed top individual medalist honors by five strokes with rounds of 67, 72 and 68 for a total of 207 (-9) to help the Fighting Knights to the team title with a three round total of 869 (+5).
Midwestern State closes the fall slate at the Bruce Williams Memorial Collegiate on Oct. 25-26 at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio.
