Ray Gene Smith was a two-way starter for Hardin College's mythical small college national championship squad in 1949 helping the Indians to a 10-1 mark and Gulf Coast Conference title.
The two-time All-GCC performer went on to play for the Chicago Bears from 1954-57 after serving as a staff sergeant and a football player in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years between his time in Wichita Falls and arriving in the Windy City.
Smith was named a second-team All-NFL performer by the New York Daily News in 1956 finishing the season with four interceptions.
After playing for the Bears, he became a criminal lawyer after receiving his degree from Texas Tech and practiced law for 35 years in Wichita Falls.
