Gholson hasn't missed a men's basketball postseason game since taking over his current sports editor position in 1980 and was named Kirk Hill Sportswriter of the Year by the Lone Star Conference in 2000.

Gholson began his journalism career as the sports editor for MSU school newspaper - The Wichitan - from 1970-72 before beginning his association with the Times Record News as a sports writer in 1972.

He served as the news editor from 1977-80 where he anchored the Times Record News' coverage of the infamous Terrible Tuesday when a large tornado ripped through the city. Gholson accurately penned the award-winning headline: 'A storm without pity.'
