Marion Higgins was a true pioneer of scholarship women’s athletics at Midwestern State University.
 
She organized the push for the first scholarships for basketball and volleyball as she served as coach of the programs in 1975-76 in addition to her graduate teaching assistant duties in kinesiology.
 
Higgins received her master’s degree in the spring of 1976 and moved on to a notable teaching and coaching career which includes 33 years of service in the Wichita Falls community at Notre Dame and Hirschi high schools. She has spent the last 27 years mentoring at Barwise Junior High.
 
Higgins enjoyed a highly successful athletic career at MSU competing in volleyball, basketball, tennis and badminton.
 
She competed in both basketball and volleyball as a freshman, sophomore and junior (1971-74) and on the tennis court as a frosh before receiving her greatest notoriety playing badminton.
 
Higgins claimed the TCIAW District II singles title in 1972-73, advanced to TCIAW state competition in 1973-74 before earning the right to play in the National Badminton Tournament in Macomb, Ill. in 1975.
