Damion McKinney (1995-97) proved to be the last of the NAIA era and beginning of the NCAA Division II era.

The Waco (Texas) LaVega High School product was the last MSU NAIA All-American as he averaged 16.2 points per game and poured in 91 3-pointers as a senior in 1996-97 as he also became the first player in school history to earn All-Lone Star Conference honors.

McKinney, a transfer from McLennan College, led the Indians to an NAIA Southwest Region Independents playoff appearance while averaging 16.9 points per game in 1995-96.
