WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State's
Kyle Davidson punched a ticket to the UTSA/ITA Small College Championships by winning the 2014 ITA South Central Regional on Sunday at the MSU Tennis Center.
Davidson, a junior from Garland, Texas/Naaman Forest, took the men's singles title with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Cameron's Joao Fazendiero in the championship match.
The victory advances Davidson to the USTA/ITA Small College Championships Oct. 9-12 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
The opportunity for Davidson earned the opportunity for the title with a straight set victory in the semis, taking down second seeded Jordan Lyden of Colorado Mesa 6-4, 6-3. Lyden was the defending regional champ.
Davidson was the lone Mustang to get into the semifinals.
Top seeded senior
Kacper Boborykin was upset by unseeded Fazendiero 6-7, 6-3, 6-7 in quarterfinal play. Fazendiero then beat fourth seeded Felix Bake of St. Edward's 6-1, 6-1 in the semis to advance to the final against Davidson.
MSU freshman Matt Tyer played his way into the quarters to face Bake before falling 7-6, 6-1.
Davidson's victory gives MSU its first men's singles player to advance in recent memory.
"Kyle did a great job this weekend," said MSU Coach
Scott Linn. "He was super cool all weekend long. It's exciting."
Davidson also paced his doubles team into the finals, teaming with
Zack Santagate as the number two seed.
The pair faced St. Edward's Bake/Ricardo Pineda, the tourney's third seed in the match to advance.
But after holding an early lead, Davidson/Santagate faded late as Bake/Pineda rallied for an 8-5 win and a trip to South Carolina.
One other MSU duo, second seeded Boborykin/Toyos, advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Metro State (Colo.) duo Jose Gaetz/Nick Baker 8-4.
Davidson will be joined at the Small College Championships by women's teammate Kayla Casey, who was victorious in women's singles.
