SURPRISE, Ariz. – Midwestern State senior
Luke Joyce was presented with one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's top honors on Tuesday evening, the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship.
Joyce, ranked 43rd nationally in singles and half of the 14th ranked doubles duo in Division II, was selected from the eight regional award winners.
The senior from Johannesburg, South Africa was cited for "being a leader by example through his patience, commitment and passion for the Midwestern State men's tennis program."
Joyce, a three-time All-Lone Star Conference singles player and two-time All-LSC doubles performer, helped lead the Mustangs to their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2007. MSU then advanced to their first Sweet 16 since 2006 with a 5-3 win over Western New Mexico at the MSU Tennis Center last week.
The 2013 MSU Marie Morgan Award winning senior has been active in the community by working with the Boys and Girls Club of Wichita Falls. He also has participated in the university's Great Day of Service, an initiative in which students volunteer their time at local charities and organizations.
He's has also earned spots on the Provost's Honor Roll and the Tri Beta Biology Honor Society.
Joyce leads the No. 17 Mustangs against No. 37 Southwest Baptist in the round of 16 on Wednesday at Noon Texas time.
