WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State Mustangs were rewarded for their Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship on Tuesday when the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Committee selected the Mustangs for the 2013 tournament.
The Mustangs (18-5) are the number two seed in the region and are paired against number three seed Western New Mexico (15-2), the champion of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The match is set for next Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the MSU Tennis Center.
"They stepped up to the challenge to get here," said MSU coach
Scott Linn. The Mustangs needed to win the LSC Tournament to make the jump from fourth in the region to second. The LSC does not have an automatic bid in men's tennis.
By winning the tournament the Mustangs not only got in, but moved up to the second seed which means the match at the MSU Tennis Center.
"We play on these courts a lot and we'll be ready to play. We're excited to host," Linn added.
Midwestern State is making its first trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament since 2007 and its 11th appearance in the tournament.
The other South Central match features top seeded Cameron hosting St. Edward's.
The winner of both matches advance to the national round of 16 at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz., starting May 8.
