Lopez sparks Mustangs to solid start at Texas Tech Open

Texas Tech Open Results

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The effort of freshman Ana Lopez sparked a solid season-opening performance for Midwestern State Saturday here at the Texas Tech Open.

The Hereford native enjoyed a strong start to the spring campaign by clocking a 5:29.17 to take a 10th-place finish in the 1-mile run.

"I was really impressed with the way Ana ran," MSU coach Koby Styles said. "During the cross country season, it was very hard for her. She definitely did her work over the winter break and stood out in this first race. She's really excited about the next one."

While Lopez provided a surprise for the Mustangs juniors Ashley Flores and Janel Campbell gave MSU a pair of solid performances.

Flores battled with two Texas Tech runners in the 1,000-meter run before settling for a third-place finish with a 3:01.60 in a tightly packed race behind TTU's Caitlin Waters (2:59.55) and McKenzie Archer (3:01.46).

"Ashley put herself in a really good position to win," Styles said. "She was cut off trying to take the same route (as Waters), but she has to be a little more aggressive. She just has to be more aware of her surroundings and be a little mean about it."

Campbell stuck with the leaders in the 3,000-meter run before settling for a third-place showing with a time of 10:50.50 behind New Mexico State's Caroline Lewiecki (10:39.19) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Vanessa Galindo (10:45.01).

"Janel was there with 400 meters to go and got outkicked," Styles said. "We haven't done any speed work so that was to be expected."

Midwestern placed three others in the 1,000-meter run including freshman Maira Salinas (3:21.38/16th), sophomore Cara Mack (3:25.06/18th) and freshman Katy Kipp (3:35.80/20th).

Freshmen Tylo Farrar (5:48.73) and Danielle Androes (6:22.56) placed 15th and 24th respectively in the 1-mile run, while junior Abigail Gonzalez (11:28.62/10th), freshman Brittany Adams (11:28.72/11th), freshman Mackinsey Flores (12:17.62/13th) and freshman Carrie Finson (12:49.37/15th) enjoyed strong showings in the 3,000-meter run.

Freshman Darianna Walker placed 20th in the 200-meter dash clocking a 27.11 and was 16th in the 400-meter dash with a 1:02.85.

"It was a different mentality being indoors. Very few of our athletes had even been a part of an indoor meet," Styles said.

The Mustangs compete in the J.D. Martin Indoor Meet Saturday at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.
