WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Midwestern State tennis teams opened their fall individual season on Saturday, hosting a USTA Campus Challenge at the MSU Tennis Center.
The Campus Challenge, an event co-sponsored by the US Tennis Association, features single set matches open to players of all-levels against collegiate players in an bracket format.
The Midwestern State men fared well in the competition, with Mustangs advancing to the finals in both singles and doubles.
The women advanced to the finals on one side of each bracket in both the singles and doubles draw.
On the men's side, newcomer Austin Crawford defeated senior
Luke Joyce 6-3 for the singles title. The team of Joyce and
Colby Meeks downed
Jarrod Liston and
Tomas Grejtak 6-3 in doubles.
In women's play, MSU newcomers
Lauren Pineda and Madeline Schorlemmer dropped Courtney Anderson and Haley Whatley 6-1 for the doubles win. In singles action, unaffiliated Anderson beat Pineda 6-3.
"I thought we had a great event to start the season," said MSU coach
Scott Linn.
"The men's final in singles and doubles were excellent. It was high-level tennis and fun to watch."
"The women played well starting out and were really ready to play early."
Midwestern takes on collegiate competition for the first time next weekend when the Mustangs host the MSU Invitational at the MSU Tennis Center on Friday and Saturday.Â
