LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - Midwestern State's ground breaking season came to a crashing halt as the third-year program finished seventh at the NCAA Division II Super Region 4 Championships Tuesday on the Red Course of the Wigwam Resort.
Â
"The girls battled all day," MSU coach
Jeff Ray said after the Mustangs posted a final round score of 316. "We will look back on this regional and know we have the ability to advance to the national tournament. We did not come close to playing our best golf. We have come a long way and the good news is that all the girls are back next year."
Â
Junior
Lauren Romines followed her collegiate best round of 71 in Monday's second round with a 6-over 78 to finish with in a tie for 12th and just three strokes off of the pace of the final national individual qualifier with a total of 227 (+11).
Â
"Lauren played a great tournament," Ray said.
Â
Fellow juniors
Kendra Whittley and
Taylor Klutts also posted 78s while
Lindsay Burkhart carded an 82 to account for each of MSU's countable scores in the final round of play.
Â
Whittley finished tied for 16th with a three-round total of 228 (+12), Klutts tied for 26th with a total of 231 (+15) and Burkhart notched a 238 (+22) to close tied for 39th.
Â
Freshman
Brenna Moore, who came into the tournament ranked 18th in the GolfStat individual rankings, struggled to her worst round of the season with an 86 (+14) for a three-round total of 244 (+28) to tie for 43rd.
Â
"Brenna really struggled on the greens," Ray said. "She had a great. It was just not her week this week."
Â
Tarleton State (899/+35), Grand Canyon (907/+43) and Central Oklahoma (907/+43) will advance to the NCAA Division II Championships to be held from May 16-19 at the Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Ky. as part of the 2012 Spring Championship Festival.
Â
Sonoma State's Spencer Heller and Tarleton State's Katy Ward claimed top individual medalist honors with three-round totals of 217 (+1).
Â
Heller along with St. Edward's Haley Haught (222/+6) and Dallas Baptist's Mercedes Rios (224/+8) earned the right to advance to national championship play as individuals.Â
