Central Oklahoma doubles up Mustangs in Game 2, 8-4

EDMOND, Okla. - Kacie Edwards and Megan Whitmire combined for six hits and drove in seven runs to lift No. 3 Central Oklahoma to an 8-4 win over Midwestern State in Game 2 Wednesday afternoon at Broncho Field.
 
The win extended UCO's national best winning streak to 34 games as the Bronchos moved to 36-3 on the season, while MSU slipped to 23-23.
 
The Mustangs close the regular season with three-game Lone Star Conference series against Abilene Christian Friday and Saturday at home. First pitch for Friday's single game is set for 4 p.m. while Saturday's twin bill begins at noon.
 
Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first as Edwards laced an RBI single down the right-field line before Whitmire drilled a three-run homer to cap the inning.
 
Edwards pushed the UCO advantage to 5-0 with another run-scoring single in the second inning before connecting a two-run blast to give the Bronchos a 7-0 lead in the fourth.
 
The Mustangs broke up Amanda McClelland's shutout bid with a single run on Carey Campbell's sacrifice fly in the fifth inning before Christina Roosmalen connected for her sixth home run of the season - a two-run shot in the sixth inning to pull MSU within 8-3.
 
Senior third baseman Mallory Mooney drove in the Mustangs' fourth run of the game in the seventh inning.
 
Freshman pitcher Lindsi Glenn suffered the loss to fall to 18-12 allowing four runs on three hits with two walks, but last just one inning in her 25th start of the season.
 
Brenna Hennan came on to allow four runs on 10 hits in five inning of relief.
 
McClelland improved to 17-1 on the season allowing four runs on six hits in six innings of work.
 
Mooney and Courtney Bingham paced MSU's eight-hit attack with two hits each.

Notables

  • Midwestern State staved off a run-rule loss with a run in the top of the fifth inning. The Mustangs have suffered run-rule losses just four times this season.
  • Senior third baseman Mallory Mooney smashed her 28th career home run in the seventh inning of Game 1. The blast tied her with Rachael Jackson, who had 28 home runs from 2004-06.
  • Junior outfielder Courtney Bingham notched two more doubles to push her career total to a program best 48 two baggers. The Arlington native needs one more double to match her single-season record of 19 set in 2010.
  • Freshman Lindsi Glenn pitched one inning in her 25th start of the season. It was her shortest outing of the season as she had gone at least three innings in each of her other 24 starts.
  • Senior third baseman Mallory Mooney is hitting .429 (18-of-42) during her current season-best 12-game hitting streak with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs.
  • Kim Jerrick has reached base in 13 consecutive games since moving into the leadoff role.
