ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Sophomore catcher
Kim Jerrick crushed two homers and drove in three runs to help No. 20 Midwestern State salvage a season opening split against Henderson State Sunday afternoon at Dee White Field.
The Mustangs fell 4-1 in the opener before rallying for a 7-5 victory in the second game of the twin bill to even their season mark at 1-1.
"We had a lot of first-game jitters," MSU coach
Brady Tigert said. "We got those out of the way and start playing our way in the second game, but we've got to get better defensively."
Freshman
Lindsi Glenn went the distance in both games and helped the Mustangs recover from a 2-0 first inning deficit in the second game to earn the split.
"Lindsi did a very good job for both games," Tigert said. "For her to give up a couple of runs in the first inning of the second game then to recover and give us a shot to win was a very big step for her. I'm proud of her. We know she is going to gain confidence and keep improving as the year goes on."
Midwestern State takes on Ouachita Baptist Monday afternoon at Sully Anderson Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
GAME 1: HENDERSON STATE 4, MIDWESTERN STATE 1
Midwestern State struck for an unearned run in the second inning, but could muster nothing more as Melissa Decker weaved a three-hitter to lead Henderson State to a 4-1 win in the opener.
The senior from Prunedale, Calif. limited the Mustangs to three singles - two by MSU senior third baseman
Mallory Mooney.
Midwestern struck for the first run of the game in the top of the second inning after
Christina Roosmalen reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Freshman
Kelley Schaefer then stroked a single through the right-side of the infield in her first collegiate at bat to stake fellow freshman starting pitcher
Lindsi Glenn to an early 1-0 lead.
But the Lady Reddies answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Hali Kizer laced a one-out double to center field and Laura Beth Ray followed with a single to the left-field gap to set the table for HSU.
Ashley pulled Henderson State even with a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Kizer before Amy Halter chased in Ray to give the Lady Reddies a 2-1 edge.
Henderson tacked on two more runs on Amber Wilburn's two-run shot to left field in the sixth.
Glenn took the loss in her collegiate debut allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out two in six innings.
GAME 2: MIDWESTERN STATE 7, HENDERSON STATE 5
Midwestern State sophomore catcher
Kim Jerrick belted two homers to lift the Mustangs to a 7-5 win over Henderson State in Game 2.
It was Jerrick's second career multiple-homer performance and first since hitting two home runs against St. Edward's (Texas) on March 27, 2011.
The long balls helped the Mustangs rally from an early deficit and gave freshman hurler
Lindsi Glenn her first collegiate victory.
The Lady Reddies struck first on a two-run single by Heather Ivey in the bottom of the first before MSU got its bats rolling in the second inning.
Junior outfield
Courtney Bingham laced a single up the middle, stole second and came around to score on
Christina Roosmalen's RBI single to left field to pull MSU to within 2-1.
Jerrick's first blast - a two-run shot - would give the Mustangs their first lead of the game in the top of the third, but Henderson State rallied for two runs in the bottom of the frame to re-establish a 4-3 advantage.
HSU's Kasey Carlock appeared to be in line for the win scattering nine hits over the first six innings before Midwestern got the bats rolling again in the top of the seventh.
Junior leadoff hitter
Elena Bennett led off the inning with a single to right field and stole second before coming plate ward to tie the game on
Nicki Duff's RBI triple to right field.
Duff scampered home on a wild pitch to give the Mustangs a 5-4 advantage before Jerrick jacked her second homer of the game to left field.
MSU tacked on another run with a help of a walk and two hit batsmen by HSU reliever Stephanie Johnson.
Glenn allowed just five hits over the final six innings to move to 1-1 on the season.
Duff and junior outfielder
Courtney Bingham paced the Mustangs' 13-hit attack with three hits each while Bennett and Jerrick had two hits each.
