WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 11 Midwestern State missed 22 free throws Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
But, for the second consecutive game, the Mustangs eventually won the game at the stripe as
Anthony Harris connected on consecutive free throws with 17 seconds left to allow MSU to escape with a 62-61 Lone Star Conference win over Angelo State.
Midwestern improves 18-2 on the season and to 11-2 in league play while the Rams fell to 9-13 and 2-10.
Also for the second straight game, the Mustangs surrendered a big lead with less than 8 minutes to play as senior guard
Michael Loyd's pair of free throws at the 7:07 mark gave them a 53-45 lead.
The Rams would score the next seven points to pull within 53-52 on Justin Walling's jumper with 6:03 to play before Loyd drilled a 3-pointer from the left wing to quell the run before
David Terrell converted an alley-opp pass for layup to give MSU a 58-52 lead with 4:36 to go.
But Angelo State wouldn't go away and rallied with an 8-0 run to take a 61-58 lead with 2:16 to play.
Terrell answered with a dunk off of a feed from
Kevin Loyd to narrow the margin to 61-60 as the Mustangs put the clams on the Rams' attack in the final two minutes before Harris converted the final two charity tosses.
Michael Loyd paced MSU with 13 points and four assists, while Terrell (12 points and 7 rebounds) and Harris (12 points, 8 rebounds added solid performances off of the bench with
DeJuan Plummer pitching in 11 points.
Huckaby and Kennen Coleman had 13 points each to lead Angelo State which fell to 9-13 and 2-10.
Midwestern State takes on Incarnate Word Wednesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
